Winter Light~ February, March, April

Homeward Bound~After the wildfires of 2014 we have slowly started to reclaim our trail system. This past Sunday we made it up to the first lake that allows us to continue north to the barrens. Dave drove the might Bravo while Liv and I followed with eleven dogs to help with the trail clearing. It was a cold day with a brisk wind and we were happily surprised to find only a few trees blocking the trail north. We made it to " Brinkley Lake" , celebrated with a cup of thick hot chocolate and then started home again. This image was shot on our return trip.

November 22 ~ Freeze-up has arrived

November 22~ With the sun brightening the horizon, I stepped outside yesterday morning to look out on the bay, I thought, this might be it…the much anticipated freeze up may have happened through the night. With ice and frost flowers in all directions, it looked for all the world to be true…a quick look through the binoculars showed a bit of steam on the south shore, but throughout the day we saw that disappear. In this image, we are looking toward Reliance. Liv had already been to the edge of the new ice, chopping a hole to get water for the dog cooker. Almost 3 inches of ice made overnight at -25C.

November 22~ At the end of the day we went to check on the progress of the ice 4 inches along the edge of the new/old ice…Looking south west after the sunset.

November 22~ Dave and Liv checking the ice at the mouth of the Hoarfrost River. 4 plus inches in some parts and bits of open water in other parts. A small black ribbon of water is still open but with more cold in the forecast we will see it freeze completely.

November 13~ Freeze Up 2014

November 13~ So much of freeze up is about the water and ice and steam but this morning it was all about the sky …

November 13~ After the yesterday's blow, the south side of all the trees and branches are covered with hoarfrost. These delicate alder branches look so strong as they bear the weight of the extra frost.
